Per Wizén

Per Wizén builds his intriguing collages using fragments of reproductions of historical artworks; for many years he was preoccupied with the Renaissance and Baroque eras. In this meticulous process, the content of the work shifts in relation to the source, pinpointing hidden meanings and underlying tensions. In his ongoing series of works, Subterranean, Per Wizén’s starting point is Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Using the reproductions of John Tenniel’s original drawings for the books from 1865 and 1871, Wizén opens up an entirely new interpretation of the relationship between Alice and the White Knight and emphasizes the uncanny qualities in Carroll’s texts.

Per Wizén (b. 1966) holds an MFA from Malmö Art Academy. Solo shows include Diversity United – Contemporary European Art in 2021, Cecilia Hillström Gallery in 2019, Skissernas Museum – Museum of Artistic Process and Public Art in Lund in 2014, and Malmö Art Museum in 2008. His work has also been featured at Amos Rex, Helsinki, Brooklyn Museum of Art, New York, National Museum of Art, Stockholm, Bonniers Konsthall, Stockholm, Borås Art Museum, Eskilstuna Art Museum, Turku Art Museum, Åbo, and at Centre Culturel Suédois, Paris, to name a few. Through the years, Wizén’s work has been presented at major venues such as Art Basel and The Armory Show.
